Sustainability Report Tuijtel: sustainability in real life

A select number of people received Tuijtel´s first sustainability report. It is not just a piece of environmentally friendly print, but a report about how a modern print shop deals with sustainability. Print shop isn´t actually the right word for everything the Dutch printer Tuijtel does, as their activities include marketing and cross media services. This makes the writing of such a report quite complex. To avoid coming across as just window dressing, Tuijtel also wanted the report to follow international guidelines by the Global Reporting Initiative. Not an easy task for HSE manager Martin Bakker. Health, Safety and Environment are the three pillars supporting the report.

The report describes what Tuijtel has accomplished over the past couple of years, such as banning K1 and K2 washing powders, CO2 reduction and certified compensation, and acquiring several ISO certificates. It also has an impressive list of improvement areas put together by the sustainability project group. This shows that Tuijtel acknowledges that sustainability is a continuous process.

Understandably, yet unfortunate, the sustainability report is not easily available, it holds too much confidential information. Unfortunate because it is a perfect example of how any modern communications company should conduct itself towards its stakeholders, clients, employees and society in general. It should be obligatory reading for entrepreneurs, managers, employees and anyone with ambitions to become one.
