Dat zijn maar een paar nieuwe features die Quark belooft voor zijn Xpress 2016 update. Een imposante lijst waarmee het opmaakprogramma in één keer naast Adobe InDesign komt te liggen of er zelfs voorbij gaat. De vraag is of alle functies zullen werken en wat de ‘restrictions’ zijn die Quark op zijn site aangeeft. Belangrijk voor het succes van deze nieuwe versie is ook de verwerkingssnelheid en de beeldkwaliteit van nieuwe functies zoals de multi-gradient color blends tool. These are only a few of the new features Quark is promising for its Xpress 2016 update. An very impressive list with which it can become as good, or even better, as Adobe InDesign. The question is of course if all functions will work and what the restrictions are that Quark mentions on its site.
Important for the success of the new version will be the speed and image quality of the new functions such as the multi-gradient color blends tool.
Xpress 2016 will become available in the 2nd quarter of this year and then we will now if it can compete with InDesign.

THE LARGEST EVER FESPA DIGITAL SHOW IS MARKING ITS TENTH ANNIVERSARY AT ITS BIRTHPLACE

Today witnesses the return of FESPA Digital to its origin, at the RAI Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam. Throughout the week, thousands of visitors from around the world will soar into the city of Amsterdam to discover the latest technology from over 450 exhibitors across digital, textile, signage and printed interior décor markets.
Four events across seven halls
With four events taking place concurrently, FESPA Digital 2016 (Halls 1, 3 and 7) is displaying the latest digital print technology including equipment, consumables, software and applications from international and local manufacturers. In Halls 4 & 5, FESPA Textile, the largest textile print dedicated, garment décor and soft signage solutions event to date, will inspire those with an interest in textile to explore new applications and techniques.
European Sign Expo (Halls 2 and 3) gathers the newest non-printed signage products and software for channel lettering, illuminated LED and neon displays, and architectural/dimensional signage and has experienced 110% in growth since the initial event in 2013, making it the largest ESE event so far. And, in its second year, Printeriors, the dedicated showcase for printed interior décor (Hall 6) has taken the form of the ‘Print Hotel’, enabling printers and interior designers to visualise the latest trends to inspire and engage with digital print. Room sets include a bar, retail space, meeting room, lounge, bathroom, reception, café and even the interiors of an elevator.
Follow the trails
Available onsite for visitors will be bespoke Textile and Signage Trails, designed to showcase exhibitors who offer textile and signage solutions in addition to their digital offerings. The Trails will be available in map form and enable visitors to plan their visit with particular preferences in mind.
Conferences to inspire and educate
Today, 8 March, the Digital Textile Conference is presenting trends, tips and practical case studies on the growth and future of digital textile printing, with textile experts such as keynote speakers Basso & Brooke, pioneers of the digital print process in fashion; David Schmelzeisen, Institute of Textile Technology Germany; and Alan Shaw, MD, Centre for Advanced Textiles, among others.
The Printeriors Conference on 10 March will feature a host of interior décor expertsdiscussing the latest trends, and how to use print as a tool within the interior space, including: Alberto Alessi, head of Marketing Strategy, Communication and Design Management at world-renowned Italian design company, Alessi; Gemma Riberti, previous Editor of Stylesight; Cholakarn Visuitpitakul, Marketing and Creative Director, Bodhi Tree Décor, and many more.
Seminars throughout the four days
Across two theatres on the show floor, the Digital Seminars and Signage Seminars will enable visitors to gain industry knowledge across varied, in-depth topics, as well as participate in Q&A sessions. Experts will be taking part in varied discussions and presentations throughout the four days of the show.
Hands-on, practical training
Within the Signage Seminars demo area, visitors can also try their hand at signwriting and painted lettering workshops, courtesy of Better Letters and Ghostsigns, as well as observe the experts create examples of traditional hand-painted signage.
Watch wrap superheroes
In addition to all of this show content, the European Heat of the World Wrap Masterscompetition (Hall 7, S50) is taking place over the next two days, with the World Wrap Masters Series Final happening on 10-11 March. Competitors from across the globe who have pre-qualified in previous events will join the winners of the European final in a battle to be crowned Wrap Master. With items such as clogs, superhero-related objects and Audi A1 sportback vehicles to be wrapped, visitors thinking about diversifying into graphic wrapping must make sure they come along to this iconic event.
Vote for your favourite print applications in the FESPA Awards
The FESPA Awards are yet another reason to visit. . With 17 application-led categories, visitors can see the shortlisted awards in Hall 6, next to the Printeriors showcase. The winners, including the publicly-voted People’s Choice Award will be announced at the Gala Dinnertomorrow at Beurs van Berlage.

In 1972 I saw the breakthrough of small format offset on my second drupa. Contrary to table offset and duplicators, presses such as Heidelberg GTO (Grosser Tiegel Offset), the Nebiole Invicta and the MAN Roland Favoriet RF could produce prints at the same quality as middle and large format offset presses. Contrary to table offset and duplicators, presses such as Heidelberg GTO (Grosser Tiegel Offset), the Nebiole Invicta and the MAN Roland Favoriet RF could produce prints at the same quality as middle and large format offset presses. I, who had just finished my apprenticeship, saw that now printing solids and four colour printing could also be done fast and efficiently in small format. This gave offset the push to become the printing technique of the next decennial.This development was made possible by rapid changes in pre-press, pre-sensibylised plates enabled the production of the perfect offset plate much more easy. 
Much simpler than the difficult production of tri-metal plates which were used in large offset and definitely easier to use than the super format repro camera which could fill a whole dark room. Materials such as Agfa´s Copyproof series for sharp a print to produce a camera ready montage and the auto reversal film by Kodak with which a wrong reading film necessary for the production of offset plates, made it all very easy. This opened new markets for printers who wanted to use small formats to produce their offset work.
Small format offset was also the perfect solutions for black-and-white book printers who could now produce their covers in colour.
That new generation of offset presses was not only more compact and easier to use, another advantage was that it was possible to quickly change paper format and type. For the fast growing market of business cards, letterhead and flyers this was an extra argument for printers to invest in these type of presses.
Small format digital at drupa 2016
There is no doubt that production inkjet giants such as from HP, Canon, Delphax and Landa will get a lot of attention at drupa. Drupa is the ideal opportunity to look at these giants at work. But, for many print shops the trend towards small format digital is more important. Small format digital presses from Screen, Fuijfilm, Xerox, Canon and Kodak are not only, just as small format offset in 1972, good for a several print jobs, but ask for a much smaller investment whilst having the advantage of digital printing, variable data and are efficient with small editions. Interesting product introductions at drupa 2016 are the new Kodak Nexpress with LED water-based inks and Screen and Fuijifilm´s new jet press series. 
Those companies with a big production capacity will benefit from a demonstration of the Xerox Rialto. This small web press looks to be one of the best solutions for print shops with between 1,5 and 5 million prints a year.
It is not only inkjet for small format. Don´t forget that toner systems are also revolutionising. With super fine toners for sharper prints and better colour quality a toner printer can be a good alternative for formats up to A3+.
Finishing is the key to success
The development of small format digital is closely linked to the development of small format finishing. 
A super fast print means nothing if you have to wait hours for the end product. Inline finishing is the ideal solution for many jobs. For brochures, books or just flyers folding, companies such as Muller Martini, Hunkeler, Watkins, CP Bourg, Horizon and Duplo offer complete inline production lines.
The growth market direct mail is served by specialists such as Pitney Bowes and Plockmatic. Together with digital printer manufacturers they offer completely automated solutions.
In-line finishing is not always the best solution. In the case of various finishing methods needed or if finishing has a negative influence on the print capacity, off-line or near-line might be the better solution. Several companies will show at drupa that, thanks to the Portable Job Format, automating these solutions is no longer a problem.
This will play a central role in the DIP pavilion. You will find not only practical solutions, but also workshops and presentations by experts in this field. Automation of finishing is, as you will be able to see there, the key to success in digital print.

Volvlakken en vierkleuren drukwerk konden, zoals ik, net klaar met mijn leermeestergezel opleiding en omscholing tot offsetdrukker, nu ook op kleinformaat efficient en snel gemaakt worden. Kleinformaat gaf offset de duw in de rug om de druktechniek voor het komende decennium te worden.

Gepresensibiliseerde metalen offsetplaten, automatische verticale reprocamera’s en contactkasten met verschillende lichtbronnen zorgden ervoor dat het maken van een perfecte offsetplaat een stuk eenvoudiger werd. Veel eenvoudiger dan de omslachtige productie van tri-metaal platen gebruikt in groot offset en zeker eenvoudiger dan het werken met donkere kamer vullende superformaat reprocamera’s. Materialen zoals de Copyproof serie van Agfa, waarmee snel een scherpe afdruk voor het maken van een papiermontage gemaakt kon worden, en de auto-reversal film van Kodak waarmee een onleesbaar positief, nodig voor het maken van een offsetplaat, een fluitje van een cent werd, openden nieuwe markten voor handelsdrukkers die kleinformaat offsetdrukwerk wilden maken. Kleinformaat offset was ook de perfecte oplossing voor zwart/wit boekdrukkers die nu boekomslagen met steunkleuren of zelfs in full colour konden maken.
Die nieuwe generatie offset persen waren niet alleen compacter en eenvoudiger te bedienen, maar hadden als voordeel dat snel van papiersoort en -formaat gewisseld kon worden. Voor de snel groeiende markt van visitekaartjes, briefpapier en flyers, die toen nog folders heten, een extra argument dat verklaarde waarom drukkers in 1972 massaal in deze persen investeerden.
Kleinformaat digitaal op Drupa 2016
Ongetwijfeld zullen de productie inkjet giganten van HP, Canon, Delphax en Landa op Drupa 2016 de aandacht van alle bezoekers trekken. Plockmatic_4000 De groeimarkt voor direct mail wordt bediend door specialisten zoals Pitney Bowes en Plockmatic, zij bieden in samenwerking met digitale printer fabrikanten oplossingen aan die het maken van een verzendklare mailing automatiseren.
Niet altijd is inline finishing de beste afwerkingsoplossing. Als er veel verschillende afwerkingsmethoden nodig zijn of als de afwerking de capaciteit van de printer nadelig beïnvloedt, dan is offline of near-line afwerking een betere oplossing. Op Drupa 2016 zullen veel bedrijven laten zien dat, dankzij het Portable Job Format, ook voor deze twee oplossingen automatisering geen probleem is.
Deze digitale orderzak zal ook in het DIP paviljoen een centrale rol spelen. In het DIP vind je niet alleen praktische toepassingen, maar ook workshops en presentaties van experts op dit gebied. Automatisering van de afwerking is, zoals je daar kunt zien, een sleutelfactor voor succes in digitaal drukken.

The myriad of production inkjet solutions at drupa not only compete in terms of production speed, paper size, printable media and cost price, but most of all on quality.
That is what printers do and the quality is determined by a number of factors such as ink drop size and how exactly they reach the media. Another important factor is how the raster image processor converts the digital data into the pattern for the inkjet heads. RIP manufacturers such as Adobe and Global Graphics have adjusted their raster technology, once designed for the first Postscript photo type setters, to the possibilities of production inkjet presses.
Global Graphics´ latest development is multi-level screening for its Harlequin RIP. Global Graphics claims that with this technology the ideal ink drop size and pattern can be reached. The Digital Print Quality Optimizer calculates the optimum drop sizes and screen pattern for particular combinations of press, greyscale/multi-level print heads, and substrate.
A number of manufacturers will show at drupa what this technology is capable of.

RIP-fabrikanten zoals Adobe en Global Graphics hebben de laatste jaren hun rastertechnieken, ooit ontworpen voor de eerst Postscript filmbelichters, aangepast aan de mogelijkheden van production inkjet persen. De laatste ontwikkeling van Global Graphics is multi-level screening voor zijn Harlequin RIP. Met deze techniek claimt Global Grahics de ideale verdeling van inktdruppel te kunnen bereiken. Om dat te bereiken wordt met de Digital Print Quality Optimizer berekend wat per opdracht, media, inkt en inkjetkoppen de beste rasterweergave is. Op Drupa zal een aantal fabrikanten laten zien wat met deze techniek te bereiken is.
